OCULOPLASTY MEETING AMRITSAR

The highlight of this meeting was the wonderful place Amritsar apart from the well planned scientific programme. Amritsar is most famous for the Golden Temple. As I sat in the precincts of this temple, the peace and tranquility enveloped me and made be feel very relaxed. There is no bar on any one for entering this temple, except one has to cover one's head. The temple with its rich gold carvings stands out like the sun. There was no jostling or pushing as in other temples, people stood quietly in queue letting infants and mothers and the elderly pass. There was contentment and patience as people waited slowly for their turn to visit the sanctum sanctorum.

The Wagah border was great, could see Pakistan on the other side. Inspiring patriotism in the masses, there was a crowd of nearly 15000 people on the Indian side. With songs and dancing, the jubilant indian crowd enjoyed every moment of the parade.

Oculoplasty meeting was a great success, my lecture was like the meeting point of squint and oculoplasty and was well appreciated especially as I highlighted the strong relation between the two. The intricate details which need to be looked into especially the cosmetic changes on the face when we perform a lid or squint surgery was highlighted. Overall a great break....

OCULOPLASTY

I am going to Amritsar today, for the Oculoplasty meeting there. The meeting will sure be interesting, there will be talks on ptosis, entropion, ectropion, blepharoplasty, thyroid eye disease, orbital decompression, orbital and lid tumors and many such topics.

I will be speaking on the relation between extraocular muscle disorders and oculoplastic surgery, Squint is tricky and may be associated with lid and orbital anomalies especially in conditions like craniosynostosis, Down syndrome and thyroid eye disease. Hence it is imperative that one carefully treats these conditions and takes care of both the aspects. With my experience and training in both aspects, I have been fascinated by the relation between the extraocular muscles and the lids and orbits. The talk will be useful to all I am sure. I am looking forward to the feedback from all the delegates....

RIGHT TO LOOK GOOD

I think everyone has a right to look good. Life is lop sided, there the good things and the bad things happening to us. I have seen many patients with thyroid eye disease who have been normal and who have suddenly started looking different with protruding eyes and angry staring look. It is important for them to understand that it is possible to make them look normal once their thyroid eye disease is under control. I guess that is how it works.

Even the squints are easy to manage and one can make the patient look good with the treatment and the surgeries. So one does not need to lose hope. Every individual has a right to look good and with excellent options now available it is possible to make it happen...

Ptosis and blepharoplasty

Subtle droop of the lids can be seen very frequently. Have you ever wondered how this can take away the freshness in appearance. The person does look a bit dull and sleepy.

Correction can open up the eyes a lot and make the patient look much younger. Ptosis surgery is easy and quite predictable with good results. My patients have always been very pleased with the results and this has been most satisfying. I combine this with a brow lift or a blepharoplasty as needed in many cases to give the best results.

It is sad when I see many patients who have been silently suffering with ptosis for decades... because their eye doctor told them nothing can be done for this and live with it. The last patient I operated towards the end of last week was 80 years old. He looks normal with excellent symmetry and a good appearance. Moreover the droop or ptosis does no obscure his vision any more.
