OCULOPLASTY AND SQUINT

The latest thought in my mind is what can I do to make oculoplasty and squint surgery better.. how can i ensure that there is minimal convalescence period for these  surgeries. I want the patient to have a quick recovery, get rid of the swelling within 3-4 days and there should be no redness or ecchymosis post surgery.

I have noticed that the squint and oculoplasty surgery usually takes longer to heal than the routine surgeries like cataract. I wonder if giving medication before the day of surgery will make things better. I guess I need to try this to see if we can make recovery faster and better.

Again we have patients who need artificial eyes post surgery , it will be great if we can make the eyes as early as a week as many come from great distances even abroad..

GANESHA FESTIVAL

Ganesh festival brought cheer to one and all in the city of Pune. It was celebrated with great enthusiasm and respect as every year. The Dagdusheth ganpati and the decorations which were a replica of the hawa mahal was indeed great.

When I travel on the roads in Pune, I always wonder the Gods must be having a tough time managing the erratic driving and traffic in Pune. People drive from all directions more to save time and money  - flouting rules either for this reason or many a times to show defiance of rules.

Ganesh festival was peaceful in the city and this year too was a great celebration....

SQUINT AND COSMESIS...

I find it interesting that there are many in this world who have squint but have never thought about doing something about it. The other day there was this beautiful child who had perfect vision in each eye but vertically and horizontally deviated eyes. He intelligence and behavior was beyond compare. She just needed the squint surgery to make her perfect.

Squint surgery not only gives a cosmetic enhancement of the appearance, it has other benefits also like improvement of the binocular vision and depth perception. It improves the self esteem and the confidence of the patient. It s not just about appearance there are many other benefits also especially with regard to hand eye coordination and depth perception...

None of the squints are so complex that one can find it difficult to get treated. It is all about identifying the type of squint and treating it by appropriate means be it glasses, exercises or surgery....

GANESH CHATURTHI

There was no dampening of spirits in the Ganesha festival this year also. I happened to visit the Dagdu Sheth ganesh pandal today. The decoration was unparalleled. The God's idol was housed in a palace which was a replica of the Hawa mahal at Jaipur.

Eventhough there is high inflation and people are feeling the pinch the festival was celebrated with great energy and expectation. Everyone hopes that the festival will usher good times..
Hope drives the world.

Even we do surgery with a lot of hopes - expecting good results all the time. Hoping miracles happen and we come up with a great cure and result...Praying to God gives us hope to face the next day.. Oculoplasty surgery is very demanding especially for good results and perfection... and still there is hope... there is light at the end of the tunnel

Interesting pitosis

The other day a guy landed in my clinic and wanted to ask me about the pitosis. He had droopy and sleepy eyes. This was just one of his problems. More importantly he had read a lot of things about ptosis on the internet and considered himself well educated on this topic and this was his problem. He knew too much!!

He had read about the surgeries and even seen them on the net. The fact still remains that every human body is not the same, the human body is the most complicated creation in this world. The doctor spends years trying to understand this unique creation of God and the more he understands, the more he realizes that he knows less of the human body..Well that is what experience does to a doctor. He knows what he should not be doing and what are the limitations of surgery.

One must realize that the net is not the source of all information and most of the times it is misguiding. There are too many negative aspects depicted. It is a well known fact that most of the times the good is easily forgotten and the bad remembered. It is important to remember that every one is unique and the results of treatment vary with each person. Hence it is important to have an open mind and have faith on both the doctor and on God.

OCULOPLASTY - PTOSIS

I am amazed at the number of patients that I see with ptosis in my clinic. Drooping of the lids seems to be a common problem - the causes are myriad from congenital to acquired. Acquired are due to old age or rarely due to trauma.
The results of surgery are very good. In combination with blepharoplasty the results are excellent. The surgery has both cosmetic and functional implications.
Overall this is a good surgery for improving the appearance and improving the confidence of a patient.. Write to us on call@axiseyeclinic.com for expert advice on this condition...

Dreams...

Dreams are what make us move... possibly the driving force of this world. We always aspire to do something more that routine, more than the mundane things in life..Sometimes it is passing exams, sometimes it is learning a new skill, sometimes we want something in our life..all this keeps driving us with a passion and desire to achieve..

If there was no dream, no innovation, we possibly will not be able to progress and invent all the gadgets that we see in the world today.

So we need to dream in order to make this world a better place...  for all of us..

Health care system in India

The health care system in India is predominantly private. Where the patient has to pay for the service. However in the UK it is the state or the NHS ( national health service) who pays for it. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, the waiting lists in the NHS are longer, while here in India we can have immediate redressal of our health problems.

However I feel health is a fundamental right and the country or state should provide free, accessible, affordable and excellent health care to all irrespective of their paying status. We are not paying any less tax than in the UK. This will be a dream as India is a huge country and there are many factors like corruption and politics which will always prevent progress. However it is still worth dreaming. ...

Festivals...

We have many festivals in India, but more of holidays because of them... we tend to eat more sweets ( spoil our health) and work less ( causing more disruption of the economy).

I guess there are 2 sides to the same coin... it is good as we live our culture and enjoy it and the other side is the disruption of routines...

Banks ... they are closed at all festivals. of all religions.. and at every famous person in history's birthday... it is interesting how they get to keep all our money and then make us run behind them to get back the money ...

Thankfully hospitals do not close at all these holidays...and that's why the medical profession is important and deserves respect.. we treat all irrespective of caste, creed , religion .. once the drape goes on the patient who is due for surgery we are not bothered about anything else than the problem that we see in the human body and we consider it our duty to do our best for the patient....I wonder how many patients realize this...

Award...what do they mean to me !

I just got the news that I have received an award for innovation in ophthalmology...

what does this mean to me... how do I take this...

I am happy ... but more so because I can share it with my family and parents, friends and of course my patients who never cease to be grateful to me for what little I do for them to help them.

I guess the joy is in sharing this achievement and not in self glorification at this achievement.

I have been regularly receiving awards one or two since the year 2009...i do work hard but also comsider myself blessed and lucky...i feel like doing more for my patients and loved ones...

I will receive one more award in December from the Strabismus society of India for my contributions to the field of squint. ..
of course i definitely look forward to it....

THE ART OF GIVING...

I guess the greatest gift that we can do when we want to master the art of living is the art of giving. When we were born we came with nothing and we leave this life we take back nothing. So, why don't we start giving in this life. I have encouraged many extremely well to do patients to give. For instance there was this patient with orbital cellulitis who was in such a serious state that she was on the verge of losing her sight. With timely treatment and good luck I could get back all her vision. What would have been her state if she had gone blind ? I impressed on her the need to help someone maybe a child as a show of gratitude for God who had been blessed her and restored her eyesight back to her. And she was more than happy to help the child. I guess circumstances tell us how fragile this life is and why we need to be considerate, caring and giving. Guess the art of living is the art of giving.....

CUSTOM MADE ARTIFICIAL EYES

ARTIFICIAL EYES Custom made artificial eyes are a good solution for people who have lost their eyes and have lost their confidence. It gives a great psychological and cosmetic boost to the individuals. The process is not a surgery, it is more like a tailor measuring you for fitting and giving you the perfect fit. Having done this procedure on many patients, we are very happy as it gives us immense satisfaction to create this new look for the patient. For more information, visit our website www.axiseyeclinic.com

EASY SOLUTION FOR A COMMON PROBLEM

CANALICULAR BLOCKS Many patients come to us with watering, however it is interesting that we are unable to offer an answer to their problems as a lot of them have canalicular blocks. Now we have better solutions for these problems. Canalicular trephination with placement of a stent is very useful for these cases and can really be an easy minimally invasive method of management. It does not need any major surgery, is easy and the patient does not need to wear a bandage also.
