INNOVATION , what cost?

Innovation is the key to improvement. But should this be at the cost of patients. Should we deprive a patient of known and established treatment protocols in order to ensure that we can discover something new. With clinical research growing at such a rapid speed as an industry, are we sometimes treating our patients as guinea pigs. Are we entitled to subject them to treatment that is not established or known to be effective. There is a question of ethics involved in this issue.
While this is debatable, contemplation is needed before we embark on any clinical trials of harmful drugs. As medical professionals we have been bestowed with special rights to treat and take care of others - we enjoy the unstinting faith of our patients and their good will and best wishes. So let us ensure that we do the best for our patients for they come to us in need.
Lets think about this every moment we see a patient walking into the door of our clinic.

COSMETIC IMPLICATIONS OF SQUINT

Have you ever wondered about the cosmetic implications of squint?

One needs to realize that the presence of squint can lead to diminished self confidence simply because the person cannot make EYE CONTACT. This may lead to lesser chance of being selected for jobs especially ones which need leadership skills and marketing. One cannot deny that beauty lies in having symmetrical and straight eyes.
It is important to realize that surgery for squint is very successful. Why shouldn't one look beautiful, when there are successful options available. Again the convalescence period is very less and getting back to work is also easy.
Even in the most complex cases, excellent outcome can be achieved.
Adults can benefit a lot by squint surgery - not only does it make one look good, also helps to improve the self confidence and enhance self esteem.

SQUINT / STRABSIMUS

For a very long time it was considered that squint was not curable in adults, on the other hand it was considered a sign of good luck. Present day knowledge of medicine makes us realize that it is not so. While squint can be treated at any age, it is important to realize that the development of special eye functions like binocularity and stereopsis can occur only in early childhood.Hence earlier the better... Even the results will be better as the eyes can lock well post surgery.

Even in adults, squint can be treated very successfully. The cosmetic benefits of squint need to be highlighted. If you have squint, you realize that the person speaking to you always has problems making eye contact with you - a matter of embarassment for you and him. You are less likely to be selected for a job if you have crossed eyes. Squint surgery is an outpatient surgery, no special precautions are needed and some of my patients have had surgery in the afternoon and gone back to office in the evening. There is no need for prolonged follow up. The only precaution is no swimming for a month or so and of course one has to use eye drops. Treatment has a high success rate and this is gratifying both for the surgeon and for the patient. Visit my ebsite www.axiseyeclinic.com for more information.

BLEPHAROPLASTY

Blepharoplasty is done to make the eyes look beautiful. The eyes are the essence of the face. With old age or due to other causes, the lids sometimes become lax and loose with overhanging skin and multiple creases. In these patients, a little nip and tuck of the lid will create a youthful appearance. In the upper lid the extra skin, muscle and fat is excised, while in the lower lid the fat is repositioned. There is no scar as in the upper lid the approach is through the lid crease and in the lower lid through the conjunctiva. Recovery is fast and there are no serious risks. The commonest problem which can occur is bruising which disappears in a few days. Visit www.axiseyeclinic.com for more information.

Axis EYE clinic

I wish every child could see well, there was no case of lazy eye and no squint, no child would need glasses... an ideal world.

I wonder why some children are told their amblyopia will never improve... can we not try and encourage and wait for that wonder to happen and make it happen - where the child will start seeing again, where the eye doctor can no longer make a diagnosis of lazy eyes in the child, simply because the child is cured.

While we cannot become God, we always want to ensure that we can make things better and do more for our patients...In that sense being a doctor is a very good profession to be in ..
It is a great sense of achievement and happiness to receive the ACHIEVEMENT AWARD AND THE INTERNATIONAL OPHTHALMOLOGIST EDUCATION AWARD FOR PURSUIT OF LIFELONG EDUCATION AND EXPERTISE IN OPHTHALMOLOGY for the year 2011 from the AMERICAN ACADEMY OF OPHTHALMOLOGY...these are the fruits of hard work..

Perfection is always difficult to achieve in life. We all want it in every sphere of life be it family and personal life, like super intelligent kids, perfect workplace, where nothing goes wrong or even surgery for that matter, where you make the patient as beautiful as possible with your surgical skill... Fact remains that it never happens and we keep trying all the time maybe till we die...
Cosmetic surgery for that matter makes me so excited and I live and dream about what I can do for the patient. This is what keeps ME going and I want to excel...
FACT REMAINS, we will keep trying for our patients.
